am assuming you are now using a 1976 style GM alt. The most common and popular model. You need one 10 gauge wire from the battery to the alternator output. This can be run directly from the battery +. Run a short 10 gauge wire from alt output to large wire at regulator plug on alt. Run small wire on alt reg plug to Bat light wire. A new alt regulator plug pigtail can be bought at any parts store and is recommended. The existing regulator should have the connections marked. One of those wires will be the bat light wire if needed. If you have a amp meter or voltmeter in the vehicle.. your existing large output wire (usually red) to hook up to the new alt output connection.0The Auto Parts stores here carry Chilton's or Haynes repair manuals that usually have wiring diagrams in the back.0My sincere apologies for the delayed response. For the 540: http://wwwpros/car_repair_information/year/1998/make/bmw/model/540i/1998_bmw_540i_drive_belt_routing_diagram0Hi, this is a 2 wire Delco alternator. The wire from the terminal on the back goes to the battery or starter, and the other (excite) wire goes to the battery light in the dash. It also goes to the PCM--not sure which pin, sorry.0Sorry can't help with a wiring diagram for the alternator but mostly the wiring is fairly intuitive. Most basic modern (machine sensed) alternators have only two wires which aren't interchangeable. 1 thick wire goes direct to a battery live and the other is a thin wire that is from the ignition or battery light.
Some alternators are mounted in rubber bushes and need an additional ground to the casing.
Battery sensed alternators have an additional (thin) live wire that eventually goes to a battery live after meandering around behind the dash for a few yards.
A few manufacturers have fitted a smart charging alternator that is controlled by a small ecu from information supplied by the engine management ecu but generally where ther are more than two wires multiway plugs are used.0
